26 July 2013, Singapore – I remember the hype when “You Are the Apple of My Eye” (那些年，我們一起追的女孩) hit the cinemas and everyone was raving about how amazing it was, or how it resonated with their childhood.
I watched it twice and hated it. Deep inside, I wished a local director would step up and bring back the fantastic xinyao (新谣) I grew up with. Thanks to local director Chai Yee Wei (蔡于位), the movie which is also the first Singaporean film to celebrate the success of “Xinyao” (新谣), stars Darren Tan (陈世维), the winner from Project Superstar Season 2; up-and-coming MediaCorp actresses Julie Tan (陈欣淇), Jayley Woo (胡佳琪) and Hayley Woo (胡佳嬑) ; and new faces like Kenny Khoo, Seah Jiaqing from Soave, Kelvin Mun, Sherly Ng and Naomi Yeo.
THAT GIRL IN PINAFORE is set in 1993 and revolves around the lives of a group of teenagers – their love for music and their deep weaved friendship. The movie re-introduces the classics with contemporary arrangements in its charming teenage love story. It reminisces the happy and simple days during a student’s life in school.
