Held annually on the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar, the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Dumpling Festival, is a Chinese festival which commemorates the legendary poet – Qu Yuan, from China, by throwing cooked rice dumplings (bak chang) wrapped in silk or banana leaves to appease the spirits of the river. The practice continues until today.
Welcome the festivities with Peony Jade’s new Cantonese creations. Premiering this season is the Steamed Cantonese ‘Emperor Guo Cheng Zhong’ 香港乾隆裹蒸粽 (S$28.80 per piece) using tender 10 heads abalone 十头鲍鱼, salted egg yolk 咸蛋, roast pork belly 花腩肉, mushroom 香菇, whole chestnut 栗子 and premier dried scallops 干贝. An appetising dazzler is the Savoury Pork and Mui Choy Zhong 花腩梅菜粽 (S$7.80 per piece) made of mui choy or preserved mustard greens and tender cubed pork 花腩肉, braised over slow fire for 45 minutes, a comforting choice that will leave you yearning for more. For a unique irresistible morsel, try the Kee Zhang served with Salted Gula Melaka dips 碱水粽跟椒盐椰糖 (S$3.90 per piece or S$10.50 for 3 pieces).
On the Peranakan bestselling list are the Nyonya Chili Anchovies and Peanuts Zhang 娘惹辣椒将鱼仔花生粽 (S$13.50 for 3 pieces) containing nyonya spicy chilli prawns, peanuts and anchovies for an intense and spicy experience, and the Famed Nyonya Zhang 招牌娘惹粽 (S$8.80 per piece) – glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in fragrant pandan leaves with minced pork 丁廋肉, mushroom 香菇 and winter melon cubes 冬瓜糖.
