Guardian Brings You Lip Hop, The New Sun Care Essentials From Korea

SUNBLOCK

With the haze-free skies at bay, there’s no better time to be frolicking in the pools, having a ball of time at the nearest park or just enjoying a picnic by the beach. Whatever the activity, be sure to be well-protected against the sun’s harmful rays. Guardian now introduces a new sun care line from Korea, Lip Hop, which is dermatologically tested and formulated to benefit the skin whilst providing high sun protection.

Just a simple knowledge about UVA and UVB rays, the former can result in skin damage that increases the rate of photo ageing while the latter is the main culprit behind sunburns. These two different rays contributes to the formation of pigmentation spots which is difficult to treat and lighten. In definition, SPF is defined as “Sun Protection Factor” and it is the ability of a sunscreen to block UVB rays. The number associated with the SPF is the amount of sun protection time it takes for a sunburn to occur. In general, the higher the SPF rating, the higher the blockage of UVA rays.

PA is defined as the “Protection Grade of UVA rays” and the plus signs associated with PA is the degree of protection efficacy. The more the plus signs , the higher the protection against UVA rays. More importantly, the application of sunscreens should be applied every 2 hours, especially so after swimming and/or perspiration.

Metropolitant would be reviewing two products, the Super Defence EX Sun Protection Milk SPF115 PA+++ ( $12.90) and the Moisturising Lightweight Sun Protection Spray SPF50 PA++++ ($12.90)

Super Defence EX Sun Protection Milk SPF115 PA+++

Lip Hop Super Defense EX Sun Protection Milk

The Super Defence EX Sun Protection Milk SPF115 PA+++ provides the highest SPF protection against harmful effects of sun damage. It comes with PA+++ which indicates that it provides a very high degree of protection efficacy. Coupled with Nano Double Anti-UV Defence formula and natural herbal extracts with strong antioxidant properties to help prevent photo ageing and ultimate sun protection against UVA and UVB rays. It also taps on the power of Hyaluronic Acid – the ultimate moisturiser for deep hydration, keeping your skin supple and fresh.

The dermatologically tested and proven formulation is water-resistant, making it suitable for use during water sports and prolonged outdoor activities.

Review

The high SPF and PA protection is quite astounding at SPF115. Most of the sunblocks we have on the market with an incredibly high SPF is usually pretty expensive and not to mention, difficult to apply in terms of the texture so we give a thumbs up for the price of $12.90 for 50ml.

In terms of texture, we were surprised that it was very easy to apply and quickly absorbed into the skin. It did not create that “rubbery” effect on the skin compared to other brands with high SPF protection. Despite the fact that the formulation is dermatologically tested, this sunscreen contains a light subtle floral scent which dissipates rather quickly after application (estimated about 5 minutes). What we loved most is the finish of this sun protection milk. Most sunscreens we’ve tried left a whitish cast on the face which is rather ghastly, especially during photo-taking sessions. The LipHop Super Defence EX Sun Protection Milk SPF115 PA+++ gave a very smooth and almost a matte-like finish without the oily sheen. We used it as a makeup base as well and the results were really good!

The LipHop Super Defence EX Sun Protection Milk SPF115 PA+++ was one of the best sunscreens we’ve tried so far. We prefer this to most of the watery type of sunscreens out there and at the price of $12.90, it is definitely a keeper.

Moisturising Lightweight Sun Protection Spray SPF50 PA++++

Lip Hop Moisturising Lightweight Sun Protection Spray

The Moisturising Lightweight Sun Protection Spray SPF50 PA++++ combines multiple functions in one handy spray bottle for convenient application on-the-go. The spray, made in Japan, provides protection against UVA and UVB rays.

It contains Acerola extract contains antioxidant properties and is rich in vitamin C, which help to reduce the appearance of dark spots, while Algae extract aids in moisturising the skin through ceramide and filaggrin. The formulation is free from PABA, parabens, artificial colorants, animal derived ingredients, mineral oil and oxybenzone, and is dermatologically tested and proven, making it comfortable for your skin.

The unique light powdery feeling provides a soft touch and helps absorb the excess sebum on your skin. Apply before makeup for a smoother, natural look. Plus, it also works as a makeup base to ensure that your look stays put all day.

Review

This is one of the new and recent innovations in the plethora of sun protection – spray on sunblocks. They provide easy and convenient application for every individual and it is definitely less fussy to self apply on your own back too. It comes in a size of 150ml and probably most people might find this a hassle to carry along for overseas trips as it is aerosol in nature and more than the allowed millilitre content of 100ml for hand-carried liquids. Nevertheless, it’s very easy to use. Just shake and spray. It does not contain any unique scent compared to the sun protection milk but it dries to a powdery feeling which is great for our hot and humid climate in Singapore. Even though it is claimed that it can be used as a makeup base, we prefer a milk based sunscreen instead of a spray which would contain a significant amount of alcohol which might be too much for sensitive skins.

Lip Hop Aloe Soothing After Sun Gel

Metropolitant does recommend the above mentioned products for overall daily sun protection. Liphop also has an After Sun Gel ($7.90) which contains 100% aloe vera to soothe and hydrate skin after sun exposure. The After Sun Gel also contains menthol for that cooling effect and suitable for all skin types.

LipHop is available in all Guardian Health & Beauty outlets. Do check them out!
