A QIPAO, A TRAM, AND THE SOUL OF HONG KONG

There’s something undeniably cinematic about Hong Kong in the rain—neon lights reflecting off tram tracks, the ding-ding echo of heritage streetcars, and that faint scent of roasted chestnuts in the air. But now, imagine weaving through those same streets in a vintage qipao aboard a 1920s-style open-top tram, wind tousling your hair as the city’s stories unfurl with every stop. That’s not a Wong Kar-wai dream—it’s the new Ding Ding Qipao Tour, launching this May through a thoughtful collaboration between Lanson Place Causeway Bay and Hong Kong Tramways.

Reimagining Hong Kong’s past through a modern lens, this weekend-only experience isn’t your typical sightseeing tour. Instead, it’s a sensory journey wrapped in silk and stirred with nostalgia. With trams affectionately known as “ding ding” for their iconic chime and qipaos rooted in Chinese tradition, the experience offers a poetic blend of movement and memory.

It all begins in Central, where you’ll visit Yan Shang Kee, a boutique that specializes in qipaos for women, men, and children. From there, you’ll slip into your garment of choice and board the TramOramic Tour from the Western Market Terminus. As you cruise through Sheung Wan, Wan Chai, and eventually arrive in Causeway Bay, the streets transform into a living theatre of old-meets-new.

The final act unfolds at Salon Lanson—an intimate lounge inside the hotel—where guests can sip on The World of Suzie Wong, a cocktail inspired by the romantic 1960s classic set in the very heart of Hong Kong.

The full Ding Ding Qipao Tour experience, priced at HKD580 per person, includes a one-way tram ride, a full qipao rental, and the optional Suzie Wong cocktail (HKD68). But for those wanting a deeper dive into nostalgia, Lanson Place has created the Chronicles of Nostalgia package: a one-night stay for two, complete with two tour passes, qipao rentals, and signature cocktails, from HKD2,430 per room. Available weekends from 17 May to 17 August 2025.

Newly reopened in March 2024 after a revamp by famed designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, Lanson Place Causeway Baypositions itself as more than a hotel—it’s a curated experience that champions local heritage and understated luxury.

Whether you’re a nostalgic local, a heritage-loving traveller, or simply curious about how elegance moves through the modern world, the Ding Ding Qipao Tour promises something rare: a romantic way to rediscover Hong Kong—not just as a destination, but as a feeling.
