WHEN THE CITY GLOWS: I LIGHT SINGAPORE 2025 UNITES ART, SUSTAINABILITY, AND COMMUNITY

As Singapore celebrates 60 years of independence, its skyline prepares for a celebration not of fireworks — but of light. From 29 May to 21 June 2025, the city transforms into a luminous canvas as i Light Singapore 2025 returns with over 17 new light installations spread across Marina Bay, the Singapore RiverRaffles Place, and South Beach.

Anchored on the theme “To Gather” and inspired by the colour red — the longest visible wavelength and a hue associated with warmth, community, and shared identity — this year’s edition invites Singaporeans and visitors alike to reflect, reconnect, and revel in a more sustainable shared future.

Where Light Sparks Conversation

Unlike typical festivals, i Light Singapore doesn’t just showcase pretty lights. It invites interaction — turning sidewalks into symphonies and everyday materials into sculpture. At Marina Bay, visitors will encounter installations like Take a walk through the meadow with me, a glowing field of 300 upcycled acrylic flowers that respond to human presence with light and sound. Design your own meadow memory workshops allow visitors to turn repurposed materials into wearable charms, reinforcing the Festival’s message of creative reuse.

Nearby, the larger-than-life Piano Walk by Amigo & Amigo transforms every footstep into music, merging playfulness with technology along the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza. Each visitor becomes both composer and audience — a metaphor for the collective experiences that define the city.

New Venues, New Perspectives

For the first time, i Light Singapore stretches its footprint beyond the Marina Bay core. At UOB Plaza, the Reverse Waterfall installation flips gravity — with LED-lit water flowing upwards — to remind us to rethink what we take as “natural.” Just across at Cavenagh Bridge, the Bridge of 1,000 Dreams is adorned with bamboo sticks etched with the aspirations of children, a symbolic reminder that the future is designed by those bold enough to dream aloud.

Over at Raffles Place Park, visitors will encounter The Guardians — inflatable sculptures crafted from recycled materials, inspired by local flora and powered by solar energy. It’s a whimsical, colourful space designed to encourage strangers to pause and reconnect, if only for a moment.

Sustainability, Not Just A Slogan

This year’s edition reinforces i Light Singapore’s commitment to sustainability beyond aesthetic appeal. Installations such as This is Not a Screen and Saulux tackle digital overstimulation and environmental consciousness, respectively. At the South Beach precinct, willow twigs respond to the wind with LED lights in Saulux, making invisible natural elements beautifully perceptible.

For those seeking more than art, the GastroBeats Festival Village at Bayfront returns — a mash-up of music, food, and upcycled installations. Daily performances, mentorships for young content creators, and even anti-marine pollution storytelling with mascots like Captain Skull and One Eye reflect the light festival’s growing depth in programming.

A Festival That Belongs to Everyone

As Mr Lim Eng Hwee, CEO of the Urban Redevelopment Authority, puts it: “A brighter, more inclusive and sustainable future is one we build together.” Indeed, i Light Singapore 2025 isn’t just about seeing — it’s about participating. It asks us to show up, slow down, and rediscover the city as a space for shared meaning.

Admission is free, with some workshops and culinary experiences ticketed. So whether you’re an art lover, eco-warrior, or just someone who loves an after-dark stroll by the bay, this year’s i Light offers a space for everyone to gather — and glow.
