12 December 2012, Singapore – Consumers have proven that Angry Birds cake, plush, toys, iPhone cover, theme park and even cable car is NOT enough. On the 3rd anniversary of the phenomenal mobile puzzle game Angry Birds that took the world by storm, Rovio Entertainment, the creative company that created the game announced the producers that they have signed to produce a 3D-animated feature – Angry Birds the movie that is slated to be released on theatres on summer 2016. .
John Cohen, producer of the successful Despicable Me, has taken up the job. In addition, former chairman of Marvel Studios and executive producer of Iron Man, David Maisel, is set to executive produce the upcoming 3D-animated feature of Angry Birds. Following Marvel Studios’ model, which was architected by David Maisel, Rovio will produce and finance the movie outside the studio system and retain full creative control while creating innovative entertainment at the highest level of quality.
It will be one of the most anticipated movie come summer 2016. Angry Birds the game has a huge number of followings. The original game itself has been downloaded more than 1 billion times across platforms and versions. And it is still a very popular game; the latest release of the game – Angry Birds Star Wars, became the number 1 best selling iPhone App chart in mere 2.5 hours upon release. Angry Birds itself has evolved rapidly from a casual mobile puzzle game into entertainment, publishing, and licensing to become a widely recognized international brand.
The collaboration of David Maisel and John Cohen is a great start to producing a hit animated film. John has hands-on producer background while David has the expertise in establishing and running a successful studio. John Cohen most recently produced Illumination Entertainment/Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me in 2010 and executive produced Illumination/Universal’s Hop in 2011.
