The top eight women in tennis are in town for the prestigious WTA Finals, with the main event starting on Monday, 20th Of October. This is the first time the event is hosted in the Asia-Pacific region, and Singapore will be the home for the Finals over the next five years (2014 – 18).
Set to be an exciting season ending finale, Serena Williams is the defending champion and the favorite to win the championships. However, it would be a tight race for the 2014 year-end No.1 ranking between Serena Williams and current World No.2 Maria Sharapova, depending on the outcomes of their matches!
Apart from potentially taking home a prize purse of a whopping US$2, 190,000, having her name engraved on the championship trophy, the Singles winner will also have an orchid hybrid named after her – the first time Singapore will bestow this honor upon sports personalities.
