The Metropolitant team embarks on a series of staycations to find our which of the local hotels you should stay when you want to be a tourist in your own country, or simply to spend a night away from home. We checked into Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy located 15 minutes away from Singapore’s Changi Airport and Marina Bay Cruise Centre, Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy lies in the heart of historical Katong – a heritage suburb in the East of the city.
We needed a short getaway in the east to check out the amazing food offerings, and it has to be close to the beach and accessible to a major mall. We chose Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy.
A short walk away is East Coast Park – an ideal venue for a family outing, with exciting beaches that offer myriad recreational facilities. Singapore’s famous food centres are also just a stone’s throw away from the hotel. The surrounding attractions aside, Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy and the rooms include free Wi Fi Internet, shuttle service to Orchard Road.
The spacious Junior Suite offers a view of the sea and is configured like an apartment. It has a bedroom and living room. Perfect for a couple’s staycation or simply a bunch of friends hanging out and chilling over a couple of beers. The Metropolitant team decided to have a quiet afternoon to explore the area and gathered a few friends over for champagne in the evening. Regardless of your choice, this room is perfect for a short escapade.

If you are not going to explore the food offerings around the hotel, there are plenty of choices for you to choose from within the hotel!
Our favorite restaurant in the hotel:
Check out the Heritage Singapore Buffet with new signature dishes at the newly refurbished Feast@East Buffet Restaurant from 8 September onwards.
The hotel is nestled in the heart of historical Katong on the East Coast of Singapore, a cultural heritage district which is rich in Peranakan culture. The Peranakans is a unique ethnic group that encapsulates all of Singapore’s Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian culture. Besides the refreshed lightings and a revamped layout of the restaurant, the newly refurbished Feast@East Buffet Restaurant also features nostalgic items from the old times of Singapore and traditional Peranakan crockery to reflect the rich culture of Katong.
Feast@East Buffet Restaurant’s buffet consists mainly of Singapore Heritage delights and traditional Peranakan favourites such as Babi Buah Keluak and Babi Ponteh (Stewed Pork with Fermented Soya Bean). The main highlight is the LIVE action station which features the Master Chefs in action to whip up piping hot dishes. Enjoy a variety of local favourites and Western delights; Savour a plate of fresh sashimi or the Signature Katong Laksa, a noodle dish with a spicy, coconut-based broth.
For desserts, do not miss the scrumptious spread of traditional Peranakan snacks, Western patisseries and handmade local desserts such as the Signature Durian Paste, Banana Cake using home-made recipe, traditional “Tong Shui” (hot soup desserts) or DIY Ice Kacang (shaved ice) to end off the meal.
The other restaurants offer a variety of promotions and special offers for the month of September and October. Check out more of their offerings here!

What we felt: I love this little getaway! Amazing rooms, friendly staff and perfect location. Other than the facade looking a little tired, I would recommend my friends to stay here for a weekend and spend the weekend exploring the neighbourhood. Even if you refuse to leave the room, the food offered within the hotel is good enough to pleased your picky mother in law.
Stay tuned as we are going incognito to check out more hotels and see how they really fare to the locals!
