Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE runs throughout August with events at RASA, Foo Chow Hall, Offtrack and other venues, bringing international names together with DJs and collectives shaping Singapore’s independent music scene.
Singapore’s independent music scene is getting a month-long addition this August, with Monkey Shoulder launching Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE across venues around the city.
Running from Aug. 1 to 31, the Singapore edition forms part of a wider Southeast Asian programme spanning four cities and is produced in collaboration with British DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson, Worldwide FM, RASA and Offtrack.
The concept is centred on grassroots music culture, with independent venues and locally rooted collectives given a significant role in shaping the programme. The Singapore line-up moves across house, techno, disco, funk, jazz, soul and hip hop, pairing international artists with selectors who have spent years developing the city’s own club and listening culture.
The series opens on Aug. 1 at RASA Space in Republic Plaza with Glasgow DJ and producer Denis Sulta, joined by Singapore’s Daytime Dancing and RPDM. The programme runs from 10pm to 4am, setting the tone for a month that moves between dance floors, listening rooms, rooftops and bars.
One of the biggest nights takes place on Aug. 22 at Foo Chow Hall, where Detroit house music figure Moodymann headlines Taman RASA. Known for sets that move fluidly through house, soul, jazz and funk, Moodymann will appear alongside a substantial Singapore contingent that includes Bobby Obby Obby, Dean Chew and Daryl Knows of Darker Than Wax, Ramesh of Tropika Global and Suffyan of Shutter Rhythms.
The pairing is significant because Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE is structured around presenting international artists alongside the people who have been building Singapore’s music communities locally.
RASA co-founder Kavan Spruyt describes the city’s identity as something created by people who continue contributing to its culture year after year. That approach is reflected throughout the programme, where visiting artists become part of an existing scene instead of serving as its entire focus.
Offtrack will host its own weekly Studio Monkey Shoulder sessions every Thursday in August. The North Canal Road music bar will feature Bongomann on Aug. 6, Dhoby Digital on Aug. 13, DJ Itch on Aug. 20 and DJ KFC on Aug. 27, with each session running from 8pm to 11pm and admission free.
Founded by members of local music collectives Darker Than Wax and Ice Cream Sundays, Offtrack has become one of Singapore’s more distinctive listening spaces, combining Pan Asian food, cocktails and a programme built around selectors and record collectors whose sounds are often less visible within conventional clubs.
Elsewhere, Monkey Shoulder will take over The Lunar Cycle Affair at Mr Stork on Aug. 21, while Mismatch hosts a Fred Again tribute night on the same evening. Anti at Fairmont Singapore will continue the programme with Monkey Shoulder DJ Nights every Saturday through December.
Music remains the main thread throughout the series, although drinks form part of the experience. Participating venues will run a month-long cocktail programme led by the Monkey Old Fashioned, with bartenders also given room to develop their own interpretations.
The partnership with Worldwide FM gives the project a broader cultural context. Founded in 2016, the independent online radio platform has built an international following by connecting underground music scenes across cities, while Gilles Peterson has spent decades championing jazz, electronic music and emerging artists through radio, festivals and his Brownswood Recordings label.
For Singapore, that approach finds a natural fit with venues such as RASA and Offtrack, where music programming has increasingly moved beyond conventional nightlife towards listening sessions, cultural exchanges and smaller community-led events.
Studio Monkey Shoulder LIVE ultimately offers a useful snapshot of that ecosystem. Moodymann and Denis Sulta provide the international pull, but the larger programme places Singapore’s selectors, venues and collectives firmly within the same conversation.
