SINGAPORE BECOMES FIRST ASIAN HOST OF INBA PNBA NATURAL UNIVERSE WITH NATURAL BODYBUILDING AND COSFIT X

The international championship was staged at LASALLE College of the Arts on Sep. 6, bringing amateur and professional natural bodybuilding to Singapore while introducing Fitness Movement’s new COSFIT X competition concept.

Singapore became the first Asian host of the INBA PNBA Natural Universe in September 2026. The championship at The Singapore Airlines Theatre featured novice, amateur and professional natural bodybuilding, served as a Natural Olympia qualifier and introduced COSFIT X, a new competition combining fitness, physique, cosplay and live performance.

Singapore added a significant international competition to its bodybuilding calendar on Sep. 6 when the INBA PNBA Natural Universe was staged in Asia for the first time.

Held at The Singapore Airlines Theatre at LASALLE College of the Arts, the Singapore edition brought the Natural Universe championship into a region where drug-tested bodybuilding has been developing steadily through national and regional competitions.

The event formed part of the International Natural Bodybuilding Association and Professional Natural Bodybuilding Association circuit, commonly known as INBA PNBA. Founded in 1988, the organisation operates amateur and professional natural bodybuilding competitions internationally, with Natural Universe and Natural Olympia among its major championship platforms.

For Singapore, the importance went beyond hosting another physique competition.

The Natural Universe was also an official Pro Qualifier and Natural Olympia Qualifier, giving amateur competitors a route towards professional PNBA status while allowing qualified athletes to progress towards the 2026 Natural Olympia in Las Vegas.

Official registration information listed more than 15 Pro Cards as available across the amateur and pro qualifying programme.

What made the Singapore Natural Universe different?

The scale of the competition extended well beyond traditional open bodybuilding.

Categories included Men’s Bodybuilding, Classic Physique, Men’s Physique, Sports Model, Women’s Bikini Diva, Women’s Wellness, Women’s Angels and other age and experience classifications. The programme also accommodated novice competitors and older athletes, with some bodybuilding classes extending into the 70s and 80-plus age groups.

That breadth matters for a sport whose public image is still frequently reduced to extremely muscular men standing under stage lights.

Modern physique competition includes considerably more variation in body type, presentation, age and competitive criteria.

The Singapore event also brought established international PNBA athletes into the same weekend as local competitors.

Among those involved were Australia’s Michael Waddington, an INBA Australia president and multiple Natural Olympia champion, American Men’s Physique competitor Hugo Garcia and Singapore’s Marvin Soh, alongside international federation representatives and local organisers.

Fitness Movement Founder, Kevin Chiak who is also INBA PNBA Global Asia President, and INBA PNBA Global CEO Diana Kakos were also part of the event weekend.

Drug testing sits at the centre of the competition

The “natural” in natural bodybuilding carries a specific competitive meaning.

For the Singapore Natural Universe, registered competitors were listed as being subject to drug testing that could include in-competition, out-of-competition and random testing.

The distinction is important because natural bodybuilding is defined by the federation’s drug-testing rules and prohibited-substance requirements. It should not simply be interpreted as an aesthetic description of how an athlete looks.

INBA PNBA Singapore states that athletes competing under its jurisdiction are required to comply with its anti-doping policy and relevant Singapore anti-doping rules.

That places athlete testing and competitive integrity at the centre of how the federation distinguishes its events from untested bodybuilding competitions.

The competition also introduced COSFIT X

One of the more unusual additions to the weekend had relatively little to do with conventional bodybuilding.

Fitness Movement used the Natural Universe to introduce COSFIT X: COSPLAY X FITNESS X PERFORMANCE, a new competition concept designed to bring physique sport and cosplay onto the same stage.

COSFIT X asks competitors to do more than wear a costume.

Physical conditioning becomes part of the character presentation, alongside costume design, stage presence, creativity, character portrayal and live performance.

Official competition listings included two formats, Physique Cosplay and Performance Cosplay.

The idea makes sense when viewed through the common ground between the two communities. Competitive bodybuilding involves months of physical transformation before an athlete presents a carefully constructed physique on stage. Cosplay similarly relies on transformation, although costume, performance and character interpretation become equally important.

COSFIT X places both processes inside the same competition.

According to Fitness Movement CEO Sabrina Ang, the concept grew from the idea that fitness and cosplay share transformation as a common language, with participants expected to build and embody a character instead of simply resembling one.

The Singapore showcase serves as an early step towards developing COSFIT X into a standalone competition and community platform.

Singapore has been building its physique sports scene for more than a decade

Fitness Movement has played a substantial role in developing the local competitive bodybuilding scene since the early 2010s.

Its event portfolio includes the Singapore Nationals, INBA Asia Pacific Championships and regional natural bodybuilding events, creating pathways for Singapore athletes to move from domestic competitions into international championships.

Hosting Natural Universe therefore represents a progression of that work.

It also places Singapore within a wider Asian natural bodybuilding calendar that now includes competitions across markets such as Malaysia, the Philippines, Japan and Chinese Taipei.

The significance of Natural Universe 2026 ultimately lies in that progression.

Singapore was once primarily sending athletes overseas to compete on international natural bodybuilding stages. In 2026, one of those international stages came here.
