Smith Street Taps officially opened in the heart of Singapore’s historic Chinatown at Chinatown Complex along Smith Street. The brainchild of craft beer industry pioneers, Daniel Goh of The Good Beer Company and Meng Chao of Brewers’ Craft, Smith Street Taps aims to make craft beer accessible to the masses with its wide range of affordable draught beers.

“We want people to be able to appreciate awesome craft beers from all over the world without burning a hole in the pocket, and that’s one of the main reasons why Smith Street Taps was born,” said Meng Chao.

The all-taps Smith Street Taps has up to eight draught beers available at any one time, and are offered on a rotational basis. New beers – some not available anywhere else – will be introduced store every few weeks, allowing customers to experience a wide range of fresh beers from both international and local breweries not easily found in other parts of Singapore.

Some of its special hard-to-find beers include the highly-rated Deschutes Black Butte Porter, a rich chocolatey beer from Oregon, as well as Adnams Ghost Ship, a golden ale from England. Customers can also expect to see beers including MOA from Marlborough, New Zealand and Nøgne Ø from Grimstad, Norway as part of its 2014 roster. Fans of Japanese beers will also be pleased to find that Sapporo beer is a permanent feature at the stall.
In order to guarantee an ideal drinking experience for the discerning beer drinker, the staff at Smith Street Taps have undergone training such as maintaining the right temperatures for the different beer types and served in the correct glasses to ensure that the beer is served in optimal conditions. Customers are also encouraged to pair hawker dishes popular in Chinatown Complex with their beer, with advice from staff.

“By setting up Smith Street Taps, we want to reach out to the growing market of people who are appreciating craft beer. We also want to help to keep Singapore’s hawker tradition alive by attracting a wider audience to visit our hawker centres and supporting our hawkers,” Daniel explained.
“We believe that this can change the perception of hawkers and hawker centres, and hopefully attract young aspirational F&B entrepreneurs to cut their teeth by starting their business from a hawker stall,” said Daniel.

So what is your excuse for not having a pint today?
