Homegrown brand, Ponggol Nasi Lemak celebrates its 35th year with the opening of its third outlet located in a two-storey conservation shophouse along Jalan Besar Road. This flagship store features a fast-food style layout, fully air- conditioned and boasts a contemporary interior.
Currently, loyal customers at the Tanjong Katong and Upper Serangoon outlets point out their favorite items. However, at the new outlet, diners may comfortably browse through menus located at the counters and on the walls. Orders are punched into an automated system linked to the kitchen where staff then prepares the customized nasi lemak. This system helps boost speed and efficiency when serving up customers’ meals. This outlet is also the only Ponggol Nasi Lemak eatery that has four set menu offerings which are popular among the working crowd.
DIE DIE MUST TRY – Fried Chicken Skin With Curry Leaves
Edmund has also invested in several automated machines in the kitchen to speed up food preparation while maintaining consistency in quality. These include special automatic fryers for their famous chicken wings, automated griller for the otah–otah (grilled fish paste) and even a special machine to ensure evenly-fried eggs.
There are several menu items, however, that are still prepared and cooked by experienced cooks daily. These include vegetable dishes which are stir-fried several times during the business day to ensure a constant supply of crisp and fresh greens. The eatery uses only the best Thai Hom Mali grain for that perfect texture and the finished product is redolent with the flavor of rich coconut milk and daun pandan (screwpine leaves).
Edmund also attributes the consistent taste and flavor of the dishes served at Ponggol Nasi Lemak to the use of premium condiments. Says Edmund: “A large amount of our food budget goes to these high-end condiments as we want to offer only the best.”
The updated menu also includes a new home-brewed Hibiscus Iced Tea and a myriad of homemade sorbet and ice cream – the first time sweets are making an appearance at Ponggol Nasi Lemak.
