The Japanese fashion brand’s latest silhouette combines the slim profile of ballet shoes with signature Mexico 66 design elements, offering a new take on everyday footwear.
Ballet inspired footwear has become one of fashion’s defining trends over the past year, with luxury labels and sportswear brands alike reinterpreting the classic silhouette for everyday wear.
Onitsuka Tiger is the latest to join the movement with the launch of GYMNARINA, a new lace up ballet style shoe that blends the elegance of ballet flats with details drawn from one of the brand’s most recognisable designs, the Mexico 66. Available from Jun. 26, the model will be sold across selected boutiques in Singapore and through the brand’s online store.
At first glance, GYMNARINA retains the slim proportions associated with traditional ballet shoes. A closer look reveals familiar Onitsuka Tiger signatures, including the iconic Tiger Stripes, the crossed heel construction and the heel flap that have long defined the Mexico 66. The result is a silhouette that feels unmistakably contemporary while remaining rooted in the brand’s design heritage.
Function has not been overlooked in favour of aesthetics. The upper is crafted from soft leather, while shirring elastic helps the shoe conform comfortably to the foot. A flexible outsole has also been developed to support natural movement, making the shoe suitable for extended wear beyond fashion styling alone.
Versatility is another key part of the design. Each pair comes with two sets of laces: flat laces finished with metal aglets for a cleaner everyday look, and satin ribbon laces that introduce a more expressive, ballet inspired aesthetic. Wearers can switch between the two depending on the occasion or outfit.
The collection launches in five colourways. Those looking for a classic everyday option can choose between Black/Cream and Silver/Cream, while Dazzling Blue/Cream and Classic Red/Cream offer a bolder statement. Rose Gold/Cream rounds out the collection with a softer metallic finish. Each pair is priced at S$200.
Founded in 1949, Onitsuka Tiger has continued to reinterpret its archive through a fashion lens while retaining the visual language that made the brand recognisable worldwide. GYMNARINA follows that approach by taking familiar sporting details and reshaping them into a silhouette that reflects one of today’s strongest footwear trends.
